Ancestral Skills Gathering Aug 30th to Sept 1, 2024
We invite you to join and bring your skills and learn new ones. Possible skills will include Fire making, Flint knapping, Cordage making, Hide work, Willow structures, knife safety skills, techniques for snares, edible wild plants, etc. If you can come and teach skills and/or help with setting up, daily tasks, take down, etc. please let us know by email at meadowlarkhearth@gmail.com. It would be very
helpful and much appreciated! Sunday will be an open day for the general public with demonstrations and presentations of Ancestral Skills along with the Seed Festival. People may come to one or both events. This is a free event sponsored by the Living Environment Foundation and Humanities Nebraska.
Schedule:
- August 29-1-5pm Arrival for instructors and those coming from a distance and/or camping. Sign in, Meet and Greet, campground set-up, instructor set-up, classes sign-up. 6pm evening meal and planning session with instructors.
- August 30-7:30-8am Sign-in & Classes Sign-up. 8am Opening Ceremony, Announcements, Instructors Introductions, 9-12am & 1-5pm hands-on class instruction. 6-8pm evening potluck shared meal, social time, story telling, music and folk dancing.
- August 31-8am Announcements, 9-12am & 1-5pm hands-on class instruction. 6-8pm evening potluck shared meal, social time, story telling, music and folk dancing.
- Sept. 1-9am to 12pm & 1 pm to 5 pm Open Day Ancestral Skills Demonstrations with hands-on activities for the General Public, Participation in Seed Festival and learning seed skills. 6 pm Ending attendee debriefing session and camp cleanup.
- Sept. 2, For those camping Sunday night and leaving Monday morning, please have campsite cleared and be ready to leave by 10 am.
On Sunday Sept. 1, Labor Day, we will hold our 12th Annual Seed Festival. It is Free for all participants, but donations are appreciated. Camping is available and Participants from a distance can arrive on Saturday to set up camp. It will be a celebration of the seed with threshing dances and lots of hands-on small scale seed harvesting, cleaning and handling techniques, and sharing general knowledge about seed growing and seed saving.
